So Bright is Okay
By Jerry B Schutz
So Bright the Vision, by Clifford D. Simak, is a collection of four short stories. In The Golden Bugs, a hoard of golden bugs invades Earth, first appearing to be helpful, but quickly becoming a threat recognized by only a few people. Leg. Forst. uses a foreign substance to rid the world, almost completely, of a quality most would deem undesirable. Simak doesn't seem to think so. In So Bright the Vision, Kemp Hart is one of the many writers inhabiting Earth and producing fiction for the rest of the galaxy's civilizations, because humans are the only race capable of lying. But Hart's mechanical writing machine is broken and out of date, so he must find a new way of producing saleable work, or starve. In Galactic Chest, a newspaper man recounts his dreary life until one day Brownies make their appearance, and he takes advantage of his opportunity. Good, but not great, I would have called the collection The Magic Ingredient, since it more closely describes the recurring theme.
The Man Who Saw Tomorrow, by Jeff Sutton, is the story of a ruthless man who travels from the future with enough historical stock market information to become the wealthiest and most powerful man on Earth. However, he needs to cover his tracks or he will be destroyed. The result is a series of murders by his hired gunmen. Sutton's writing is very uneven. The story starts slowly, with too much of the action retold through conversations of other characters. There would have been more room for action scenes if Sutton hadn't spent so much ink on the protagonist's romance, and his feelings, in such a short book. Added to that, she walks out on him and they both get killed, so it is hard to understand why this subject was to take so much space away from the theme of the book. Towards the end of the story the action picks up and I started to have some hope, but then the nerdy mathematician is magically transformed into a heroic action figure, which left me in disbelief. The title is somewhat of a misnomer, since the man came from tomorrow. Read at your own risk. My two star rating is based on Sutton, while I give Simak's collection more of a three.

Yarners, Brownies, and Time Machines
By Paul Camp
Clifford D. Simak's _So Bright the Vision_ and Jeff Sutton's _The Man Who Saw Tomorrow_ (both 1968) are a pair of Ace Double Books-- a couple of average entries for the series. The Simak is a collection of four stories, and the Sutton is a short novel.
The Simak stories are "The Golden Bugs" (_Fantasy and Science Fiction_, 1960), "Leg. Forst." (_Infinity_, 1958), "So Bright the Vision" (_Fantastic Universe_, 1956), and "Galactic Chest" (_Origininal Science Fiction_, 1956). None of these stories represent Simak at his very best, but none of them is a stinker or a time waster, either.
The first story is about an obnoxious neighbor and an unusual alien invasion. The second is about where intergalactic stamp collecting can lead us. The third is about the machines that can write all too well. For a price. Simak's yarners are anticipations of Fritz Leiber's wordmills. The fourth is about a reporter who discovers a plot engineered by benevolent alien brownies. If only we had such creatures about today...
The Jeff Sutton novel is a fairly routine affair with cardboard characters about a mathematical genius from the future who travels back in time to commit murder in order to change history. Needless to say, things don't work out quite the way they were planned.
My ratings are: _So Bright the Vision_, three stars; _The Man Who Saw Tomorrow_, two stars. Global score: three stars. The cover for the Simak is by Gray Morrow The cover for the Sutton is by Jack Gaughan. There are interiors by Gaughan. I cannot say that any of the illustrations are distinguished.
