Building on his 2000 anthology What Is A Man?, Newell's latest book on "how to be a man" challenges the stereotypes about uncaring and belligerent bearers of XY chromosomes. Tracing ideas of manliness through the work of such Western writers as Aristotle, Homer, Jane Austen and Ernest Hemingway, among many others, Newell argues for a return to traditional ideas of manhood to inspire young men "to treat others-and themselves-with respect." He reminds readers that men need "the five main ingredients of a satisfying life": love, courage, pride, family and country. Through the ages, Newell writes, love meant sensitivity and nobility, while courage and pride were about "the struggle to defend and extend justice and to overcome our own baser instincts." Somewhere along the way, though, the image of the traditional "manly heart" was lost, and men turned to misogynistic machismo and senselessly violent behavior to prove their manhood. Newell insists that a balance among the five manly virtues is the key to reversing the contemporary man's detachment from loving-kindness and his tendency toward "brutal spasms of reactive violence" (such as the Oklahoma City bombing, the Columbine high school massacre and the 9-11 attacks). Those resistant to reducing men-and women-to a set of "natural" character traits take note, for this book certainly considers the Mars/Venus school of thought a flawed accomplice in undermining all that is positive about men and their potential contributions to a just and happy society.

Waller R. Newell is a professor of political science and philosophy at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario. The editor of the acclaimed anthology What Is a Man?: 3,000 Years of Wisdom on the Art of Manly Virtue, he is a contributor to The Weekly Standard and other publications. A former fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C., and a John Adams Fellow at the Institute of United States Studies at the University of London, he lives in Ottawa, Canada.

Conservative values a liberal can understand

I wouldn't have thought a self-described conservative could speak so eloquently and profoundly about the erotic. Perhaps "conservative" isn't a good way to describe Newell - he's more of a classicist, harkening back to the full-bodied ways of Greece and Rome, while integrating the perspectives of more recent ages as well.

His prose is the most enjoyable I've read in a while; his mind is well organized and playful, seemingly capable of going anywhere (except perhaps to an appreciation of the artistry and integrity of Eminem, whom he ignorantly skewers, my one quibble with the book).

I read this book because I was asking myself "what does it mean to be a man?" and I found the book satisfying. No superficial or facile responses here: Newell's perspectives, while fresh and inspiring, are grounded in a rich understanding of history. In that context, he brings back to us the possibility of vivid adult life rooted in maturity rather than rebellion, a radicalism grounded in reality rather than utopian fantasy.

I can't say I came to grasp how the value of "country" applies in our current crumbling world, or how "family" applies to my own personal context, but being oriented to these concepts as something other than trite catcalls seems helpful. And the treatment of love as a call to virtue and as something that must be earned is a welcome alternative to the stagnant waters of modern approaches that treat love as some kind of mutual charity or day-care center.

Courage and pride are the two others Newell considers part of the historic "Code of Man" and I enjoyed these chapters as well - the concept of the Golden Mean between two problematic extremes is prominent in his approach.

On that note, if you think you would enjoy an approach to the question of "what does it mean to be a man" that's neither stupidly misogynistic nor stupidly blind to sex differences - an approach that honors men's and women's capacities in a fairly deep way and elucidates the differences in ways that bring the sexes closer rather than farther away - buy and read this book.

Wish he taught at my school...

This book is astounding. His earlier book on masculinity I gave to my younger brother for Christmas- he'll be getting this one this year. I work in a book store and attend SUNY New Paltz as a philosophy student- I've been putting this book in the hands of customers and professors both, and none have been dissapointed. Waller Newell's traditional approach to masculinity, with contemporary references, is the perfect answer to our present male identity crisis. Buy both this book and _What_Is_A_Man?_ for yourself, and for others. They make great presents for Bar Mitzvahs, Christmas, birthdays, Hannukah, Confirmation, graduations, and young men that might have some time on their hands in jail or a drug rehab program.

Choppy Prose

Two Peruvian police officers , both outsiders, are stationed in a remote post in the Andes. While they investigate the disappearance of 3 men a terroristic organization operates in the area. In the cold lonely nights, the younger officer (Tomasito) tells the older officer (Lituma) his love story which is how he came to be in such a remote location. They frequent a bar where the story of its owners weaves in and out.

Like Llosa’s Conversation in the Cathedral, the text is hard to follow. The tenses move past to present and a conversation can be interrupted without warning to a backstory. An episode can begin while another is in progress. The only thing that is linear, and in some ways holds the book together, is Tomasito’s love story.

As the book begins, you expect it is about the serruchos, the Maoist style terrorists who could descend on this small town at any time. The best prose relates to them: The story of the missing Pedrito Tinoco, his bonding with the vicunas and how the serruchos visited them; the French couple and their presumptions about the terrorists; and the portrait of environmental researcher who believes that the terrorists share her brand of idealism.

This good prose is sandwiched in with anecdotes and backstories such that at md-point the book seems to be about life in the Peruvian Andes. Some backstories have what seems to be gratuitous crudity, both scatological and sexual. The best back story is Tomasito’s particularly when the dialog contrasts the old/wise and the young/impulsive.

"Feast of the Goat" was masterful, and I remember (many years ago) "Aunt Julia and the Script Writer" as great. The last two Llosa I've read (Conversation in the Cathedral and this one) have had prose that wandered too much to either enjoy or to make a point. Were it not for the portions of exceptional prose I'd give it only one or two stars.

I read "Death in the Andes"(Lituma en los Andes) a novella written by the peruvian author Mario Vargas Llosa, three years ago when it just came out in spanish. I don't remember the details very well of this story about how the peruvian terrorist group Sendero Luminoso(Shining Path) affects deeply the lives of a heterogeneous group of people:Tourists, white people, incas, rich people, poor people, even a witch. But the feeling that I had after reading it is still in me. That feeling of desolation, of terror,the coldness of the mountain, the humidity of the land, and above all, the eternal waiting for something horrible to happen. Like living with a Damocles sword over your head. As you might well know, in good literature, it isn't only the details that counts.

wild suspicions just confirmed

Vargas Llosa is a great writer, with a fantastic routine, able to throw off
enjoyable and moving stuff even when not in top form. So I cannot say I did not
enjoy a lot in this book (even if it does not measure up to The Conversation in the Cathedral or the
War of the End of the World), but found some serious weaknesses. First, this is
Vargas Llosa's first literary creation after the failed presidential bid in
Peru. This makes it is hard not to read as sour grapes: Peru did not elect me,
well, it is an irrational, atavistic country anyway. Second, despite the
mystery story form, hardly any surprises are coming. From the very beginning,
Lituma is pondering the same suspicion about
the three disappearances and the role of
the diabolic innkeeper couple. The
end just brings more and more confirmation. The very simple
parallel love story of the young civil guard is saved from banality only by the human touch the writer can lend it.

The next day their close pal Chet Morton rushes to the Hardys' home to report that the Morton farm truck carrying a shipment of high-powered rifles belonging to his uncle, a big-game hunter, has been stolen. These two apparently unconnected events are clues in a tangle of mystery which turns out to be one of the detective brothers' most exciting adventures.

Franklin W. Dixon is a pen name used by a variety of authors writing for the classic series, The Hardy Boys. The first and most well-known "Franklin W. Dixon" was Leslie McFarlane, a Canadian author who contributed 19 of the first 25 books in the series. Other writers who have adopted the pseudonym include Christopher Lampton, John Button, Amy McFarlane, and Harriet Stratemeyer Adams.

Wolves in the Woods

Rarely does money fall from the sky. But on dark and stormy afternoon Frank and Joe Hardy were caught outside Barmet Bay when the engine of the Sleuth died. The violence of the ocean prevented making any attempt at repairs. The boys spot a yacht, but are unable to make contact with it. Soon the boys hear a helicopter, and then a siren. The boys are able to glimpse the yacht and the helicopter for brief moments, but are unable to gain the attention of either. As the helicopter passes overhead a wallet full of money drops into the water next to the Sleuth, and the boys are plunged into another mystery.

Soon thereafter the Hardy boys' best friend Chet Morton has a truck with a shipment of high power rifles and camping equipment stolen while he is eating at a roadside restaurant; leaving the keys in the truck may have had something to do with the theft. The trail leads to the North Woods, where wild dogs have been reported to roam.

The mystery grows when Frank Hardy is kidnapped. Frank and Joe have stumbled into some kind of mystery, but they are unable to understand the nature of the mystery. Frank escapes by himself and halts payment of ransom just in time.

Soon, Fenton Hardy reveals that he is involved in investigating the theft of United States currency in Central and South America. Later, we learn that the money is being used to fund terrorists and to purchase arms for them.

All trails seem to lead to the North Woods, where Frank and Joe Hardy and their friends encounter a man raising wolves, including Saber, a killer wolf. The stakes are high as the brothers and their friends face death numerous times.

There are a couple of problems with this story that I found distracting. First, healthy wolves do not attack and kill people. In spite of numerous studies that confirm this observation, people persist in portraying wolves as people killers. Second, the criminals' preoccupation with $2,000 seems bizarre. The criminals have a yacht, a helicopter, and numerous henchmen. It seems strange that any criminal organization would be overly concerned with a mere $2,000.

Other than these two annoyances, this adventure is exciting and interesting. The teaser promised that this book would be one of the Hardy boys' most exciting adventures, and it appears that the book has fulfilled that promise.

The Hardy Boys series is recommended for ages 8 to 12 because the series is relatively tame for the previous target audience of ages 10 to 14. However, this book in the series contains many interesting moments and will keep most readers guessing the answers to the mysteries until the author reveals the final solution.

Full of Adventure

Originally published in 1951, the biggest flaw with this volume was the absolutely horrible cover art drawn by Bill Gillies in 1951. Nappi's 1968 revision was a vast improvement on the original cover and fishing trawler of a Sleuth portrayed on the front cover. The book itself opens with a bang as the Hardys find a wallet full of money while out in Barmet Bay during a storm. Personally I now think the Sleuth has a voodoo doll that has been hanging beneath somebody's shower head as everytime it seems they take out that boat it rains!! This is a well written suspenseful adventure that takes place for the most part in the "North Woods" near Bayport. Very delightful reading throughout the entire book until perhaps the final chapter which tended to lack creativity. I was somewhat let down with Chapter 25. But the first 24 were excellent. This was in fact one of my more favorite volumes. RATED A-

Another Great Book

This review concerns the original 1951 edition. Frank and Joe are plunged into another mystery when they are out in the Sleuth during a storm and they find a wallet full of money and when they track down some rifles and camping equipment stolen from Chet to the North Woods. This book has one of the best opening chapters of any in the series and it gets you into the mystery very quickly. The pages from about 60-130 when the Hardys and their friends go camping in the North Woods are the best, but the whole book is really good. One thing I liked about this book was that it actually remembered that Frank and Joe have other friends besides Chet and they were given more than just a passing mention. It's a great book any Hardy Boys fan would want to read.

In fact I bought this book for an American friend who fought in France on D-Day ! . I had read it in 1944 and I had liked it so I wanted to share my pleasure with somebody who could appreciate it ..

An enriching tale

An enchanting saga about how a variety of characters react to a difficult time.
An engaging view of a clash of cultures. The vigorous American culture versus the age-old Italian culture.
An endearing cast of characters that will linger in your memory. From peasant buffoons to wise old men. From selfish to magnanimous. From simple to sophisticated. From despicable to saintly. An amazing portait of humanity.
An enthralling quest of one Major Joloppo. His attempt to return civility to an incivil world.
And it is all couched in a warm, humorous story line which will keep you interested to the last word. Not a "page-turner" or thriller, but you will want to know what happens to the Major on his quest and how all of the characters either help or hinder him along the way.
I was very glad I followed the advice of the other reviewers and read this book.

Sweet wonderful read

Sweet story of the American Army in Adano, Italy, as they push the Germans out of Italy. Major Joppolo is the adjutant assigned to restore order to Adano. As he meets the townspeople the one request made most often is for the return of their bell which was taken by the Facists to melt down for bullets. Major Joppolo does what he can for these people.

This was a wonderful story of a town and its people. The people were adorable and funny and pains at times. As Major Joppolo deals fairly and justly with these people, he also tries to find their bell. He is able to schmooze with the best of them to get what is needed and what he wants. Even when Americans are at fault he shows the townspeople that his justice extends to his men as well as the townspeople.

The ending is bittersweet. I would like to know what happens to both the townspeople and Major Joppolo. They are not characters I will forget for a long time.
