parker is still good

- It wasn't until I started reading "Small Vices" that I realized how much I'd missed Robert Parker and his Spenser series. During an 18-month period about two years ago I read all of Parker's books. I haven't read any of his books since. And then recently I picked up this new book and, although I was having a bad day, I was soon smiling and laughing. Spenser was back and I was sure enjoying his company. I've tried before to determine exactly why I love this series so much, since the basic concept is so cliched: Spenser is a tough, strong private eye, but with a heart of gold, who usually gets the bad guy. He's very ethical and serious at times, like Lawrence Block's Matthew Scudder character, but he is also quite funny at times, a la Donald Westlake. Mostly, though, he is witty, sharp and smart. I suspect that part of me thinks that I could be Spenser if I buffed up and learned how to throw a punch. The writing is always tight in his books. During one conversation, for example, Spenser tells the reader simply, "I had nothing to add to that," whereas other writers would elaborate on that thought. There is also a racial element to the series, with Spenser's buddy, Hawk, a black tough guy who acts dumber than he is and plays to the racial stereotype but is actually quite intelligent and uses people's expectation of him to his advantage. All of this results in great dialogue. At one point in this book, for example, Spenser is injured. "I don't need that much help," Spenser said. "He ain't heavy," Hawk said. "He's my brother." In this book, Spenser is hired by a law firm concerned that a black man convicted of murdering a white girl in an almost all-white college may actually be innocent of that crime. The suspect is guilty, though, of raping other women so few go out of their way to help Spenser unravel the truth. Spenser also encounters great deal of racism. Soon some tough guys tell Spenser to quit his investigation and throw him some muscle. He pretty much ignores the threats until he starts getting followed by a guy who prefers to let his bullets do the talking. And then things get really interesting. Meanwhile, Spenser's long-time girlfriend, Susan, wants to adopt a child but Spenser is against the idea but doesn't want to make her mad either. This is certainly not Parker's best book, but even a weak Parker book is better than much of the novels currently available. Part of the problem may be that Parker has been writing this series for too long, more than 20 years now, so it will be interesting to see how a new non-Spenser book he has out compares. And when I read that one, I'll tell you my conclusion.

Bravo!

Robert Parker writes like a skater on ice who floats effortlessly. He may put a lot of work into his writing, but he does not groan and grunt for our benefit. He presents the reader with polished pieces. This is elegance.

I have read a dozen of Parker's books, and enjoyed every one. However, I would say Small Vices is the most heroic, in that this book deals with grand themes. Academics may sneer at mystery novels, or come slumming, but these are our myths for the modern world.

If you haven't read the book, please stop reading this review here, because I wouldn't want to spoil anybody's enjoyment. The book has the classic Spenser scenes: the Threat, Displaying the Weapons, Pearl the Wonder Dog, great dialogue, vivid character sketches, and so forth. Spenser is careless, though. He shouldn't have been out running alone with the Grey Man on his trail.

Curious. In the end, everybody gets off. Spenser gets off with wounds, the Grey Man gets off without jail, the parents get off, the murderer gets off, the wronged prisoner gets off, and Hawk gets off with no pay for ten months' TLC. The only person who really loses is the victim, and she died happy.

Spenser falls . . .and gets up!

This is one of my favorite Spenser tales. And we love him because . . . . I guess it's kind of that John Wayne feeling, you like to have a big guy around who can always be relied upon to take care of business. Here, he almost fails, and that's the magnetism of Small Vices.
Spenser is hired by the now successful, leggy Rita Fiore. There is the usual overt flirting ". . . too bad you didn't . . ." and "Boy, if you only had . . ." and "you had your chance . . " that we've come to chuckle at and with the honorable sleuth.
Here he's asked to track down 'the real murderer' which will free a man wrongfully doing life in the hard place.
It's hard to pity the imprisoned man Spenser is asked to free. It seems most feel he doesn't really deserve to be freed . . . even the loyal friend Hawk feels that Alves belongs in jail, "either for this crime or one he got away with."
But Spenser, who again tells someone his first name but not us, gets too close and takes three slugs to the shoulder, leg and chest.
It takes Susan, Hawk, Quirk, Belson, Lee Farrel and Vinnie nearly a year to rehab Spenser, who loses 40 pounds in the process, has a hard time making his limbs do what he wants them to, and basically can't walk. But they do and honor and heroism prevail, villains are suitably thrashed, and Susan and Spenser hook up. Again. And again.
There's a lot of vulnerability in Spenser this time. Like Joe Pike in The Last Detective, his body has betrayed him and he is lost. Sadness, even tears. The pages describing Spenser trying to get up the hill in Santa Barbara after again learning how to walk again are riveting. Good stuff.
If I had a disappointment, it was Spenser's laissez faire attitude towards Hawk who took a year off to mentor/train/help him. But maybe that's part of the mystique, he knew how he felt and so did Hawk.
Great stuff. Rachel Wallace is still #1 for me but Small Vices is a close second.

First Steps Towards a Green Design

I am a property owner considering LEED Certification for a building remodel. As a starting poijnt, I have read the LEED guidelines at the Green Building Council website. However, I was looking for something more substantial to help understand the process. "The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design" fills that purpose.

This Guidebook is written by the HOK Architectural firm which has been one of the leaders in sustainable design. The book has three sections. The first chapters are a check list of design guidelines and questions that one needs to explore during the LEED design process. The second section looks at sustainability issues as related to certain building types and the final section are a series of short articles on LEED projects the firm has worked on.

This Guidebook is on its Second Edition and is invaluable for all those interested in LEED certification. It is well written and clearly organized. It is an expensive book but well worth the price. It is a great introduction into what is becoming an important area of design. Highly recommended.

Integrated Review of Two Top Books That Mesh Well

Although I normally read books in twos and threes on the same topic to gain varied perspectives, this is the first time I am writing a single review encompassing two books. They mesh together so well that I cannot imagine studying this subject without having BOTH in hand.

The two books are Sun, Wind & Light: Architectural Design Strategies, 2nd Edition and The HOK Guidebook to Sustainable Design.

Start with the introduction in the Guidebook, which is blessed with a Foreword from Paul Hawken and see especially page 13 where the cost benefits are shown, with 48% energy savings for Gold, 30% for Silver, and 28% for Certified. See also the illustration on page 15 that I have reproduced in the image I am loading for both books: the old decision model was Cost at the top, with Schedule and Quality anchoring the triangle. the new decision model still has cost at the top, but Schedule and Human Health, Safety, & Comfort are on corners of this new pentagon, and the bottom is achored by Quality and Ecology, or what Paul Hawken would call in his books, "true cost" to the Earth and Humanitas.

NOW shift to the Contents and the Detailed Contents of Sun, Wind, & Light. As one reviewer notes, this is a course book. I did not recognize it as such, I saw it as one of the most gifted complete collection of factors to learn and apply that I have ever seen for ANY topic of study. The content and organization of this book is nothing short of Nobel-level "wow." Finish going through this book.

NOW go back to the first 218 pages of the Handbook, and study the checklists and varied helpful boxes and explanations. The rest of the book (217-459) is case studies of specific buildings, each a few pages, that can be left for last.

At this point, I went into the Glossaries and Bibliographies of both books. Each is distinct, neither supplants the other. They must be taken together. I read Glossaries, and Indices, as content, and use them as a form of "second look" (in extremely complex books, this is actually where I start).

NOW go back to the Case Studies in the Handbook, and read each from the point of view of what "take away" lessons are there for your own building.

Reading these two books was a real treat. Outside my office kitchen is a deck with an 11 point system for attracting birds from bluebirds and bluejays to cardinals, gold finches, two kinds of woodpecker, and a flicker as well as the more common birds. I believe in diversity, and I believe that if we don't get our act together and start living up to the ideals of Natural Capitalism (see other recommended books below), our world will go sterile and dark before out great-grandchilden can share in the beauty of this planet. These two books are part of the solution, and I am in serious awe of those who made them available to all of us, and at reasonable prices to boot. Well done!!!

The Book & 2 Movies Based upon It, Taken Together, Portray Grimly a Fatal Outcome of Full-Scale International Nuclear Warfare

I first read Nevil Shute's novel, "On the Beach", years ago, back in the late 1950s, while (or very shortly after) it still was on the bestsellers list and when paperback editions first appeared. Its pessimistic message about humanity's fate in a full-out nuclear war still resonates. In fact, things have become infinitely worse with the proliferation and power of nuclear weapons' capabilities since the time at which this novel was published. Things are worse than those nuclear times of the 1950s now in the late 20th and early 21st century as nuclear power industry accidents of the scale of Chernobyl and especially of Fukushima have occurred (and, to be assured, as ominous geo-engineering feats wreak their own damage, as well, to add their part to damaging the biosphere). The latter of those nuclear accidents, still uncontained (as of these words in late July 2015) and likely never to be halted by human means, threatens, month by month, year by year, to poison not only the North Pacific Ocean, but the entire Northern Hemisphere, land, sky, and all oceans, seas, and watercourses alike. If eventually the murderous pollution from Fukushima, however gradually, seep into the Southern Hemisphere, the historic scenario, indeed, may resemble that of Shute's fictional one.

Don't rely on either or both of the movies based upon this work to convey fully enough Nevil Shute's catastrophic vision. They both are worth seeing, of course, and each covers various aspects of the book in its own way. However, there is a lean and fatalistic yet tender quality to Shute's "On the Beach" that neither movie portrays quite adequately enough. The social breakdown that occurs in the novel as mass death spreads from the Northern Hemisphere down into the Southern one, into, specifically, Australia, is something that the book depicts much more chillingly and relentlessly than either of the movies does so. Of course, all ends, in any of these versions, monographic or cinematic, hopelessly with the end of human and animal life on the planet. Read the book!

Anne Copper is the[...]daughter of the Earl of Warwick. The earl's wife, Countess Philipa, hates Anne, her siblings, and their mother Ivy who is the earl's longtime leman. When the earl demands that Mary, his and Philipa's legitimate daughter, marry Brodick McJames, Philipa hatches a plan to keep her daughter by her side while ridding herself of Anne once and for all. No one, least of all Anne, anticipated that she would fall in love with the burly Scotsman. Anne sees no way out of her plight, but vows to protect her family. However, her deception may cost her the love of her life.

To live in a time where your future and daily life is dictated solely by those around you, must have been difficult, to say the least. Anne is forced to marry a stranger. But what a great man Brodick turns out to be. Brodick is honest, fair, and a strong capable leader. He elicits authority and instills faith from his people. He is a passionate lover and a handsome man. Anne's feelings of angst over her betrayal as she falls in love with Brodick are tangible. She is virtuous and kind- hearted. In Bed With a Stranger is an erotic tale of love, lies, and deception.

Scottish Earl finds his soul mate

Despite there being some flaws in the plotting, this novel is very entertaining with a dashing Scottish hero and a kind hearted heroine. There's plenty of romance, action, intrigue and danger too.

Anne Copper is illegitimate but lives with her mother and siblings in her father's castle. Also residing there are her father's wife, Phillipa, and her half sister Mary who are evil, scheming, jealous and spoiled. Mary is married by proxy to a Scottish Earl and she despises the fact heartily. Her mother concocts a terrible plan, Anne will go in Mary's stead to the Earl's home. Anne is two years younger and it seems she resembles Mary a little, both having the same hair color. Mary will take her rightful place as an Earl's wife when Anne becomes pregnant and returns to England. Phillipa and Mary believe that the Scottish Earl will not recognize the switch. (This is where I had problems with the plan; it is just illogical that a man who has lived with his "wife" for a year would not recognize the switch in looks and temperament.) Anne goes along with this scheme to save her family as Phillipa claims she will throw them all out of the castle.

Anne goes to Scotland and tries to make the best of her situation. Her husband Broderick is kind but determined. He wants to bed Anne but she is doing all she can to avoid marital relations as she does not want to become pregnant. She knows she would have to give the child to her sister to raise. (I had a hard time seeing kind hearted Anne giving away a child to her mean spirited sister, seemed inconsistent)

The relationship between Broderick and Anne is believable, romantic and sensual. Broderick is honorable, virile and protective. What was odd is that he never used Mary's name for Anne but called her wife instead. Anne is charmed by her pretend husband and lives a life carefree of duty and threats. Their idyll can only last so long however, and Anne realizes that she has some difficult choices to make.

I enjoyed this novel; in fact I read it in one sitting. The middle portion of this book is by far the best part, with Anne discovering the mystery and gift of love and Broderick learning to trust his heart to Anne. Also there is some sweet irony in this story too.

4 and 1/2 stars - Beguiling Tale of a Scot's True Love!

First, I just gotta say that I cannot see anyone calling this story boring, so I do not agree with the one and two star reviews. Just ain't so.

Set in 16th century England and Scotland (mostly Scotland), this is the first in the McJames trilogy. It is a very clever and well told tale. Like other Wine romances, her dialog is believable and truly well crafted, her characters multidimensional, the history seamlessly woven in (and accurate) and the story fast paced. I do wish she would describe the characters' physical features a bit more and remind us of what the hero is thinking about the heroine. But, oh well, I digress.

This first story tells of Anne Cooper, the acknowledged bastard daughter of the Earl of Warwickshire. The Earl would never have taken a mistress if his unloving wife hadn't spurned his bed for fear of dying in childbed after having a difficult first birth with her daughter Mary. But his wife refuses to relent, and in time, the Earl comes to love his mistress and their children and takes care to have the children well educated. Though Anne was raised as a servant in her father's house (think Cinderella), and is resented by the Earl's wife, Anne has become a young woman of grace and intelligence. When her father marries her legitimate half sister Mary (by proxy) to the Scottish Earl of Alcaon, Brodick McJames, Mary and her mother plot to send Anne to Scotland instead of the spoiled and selfish Mary so Mary need never bear a child. The plan is for Anne to get pregnant and then return to England and substitute Mary for Anne. Anne resists the deception that she knows is wrong, but is persuaded to go along with it when her mother and siblings are threatened. Once in Scotland, Anne finds she respects Brodick and his clan. Their physical relationship becomes quite special....and they fall in love.

You will love this story of two wonderful people falling in love in a time when James VI, son of Mary Queen of Scots, ruled Scotland. It's a triumph of love over legitimacy. I recommend it.

This book is an ABSOLUTE MUST READ FOR EVERYBODY!

Oh this book is such a classic! Young girl who is the oldest sister decides to run away. She carefully selects her accomplice (second younger brother jamie) and then camps out in the Met. Good golly! How awesome! This was the original museum slumber party! I (re)read this book with my 13 year old and 11 year old twins - all boys - and we had a great time imagining what it would be like to: (1) not bathe except in a public water fountain; (2) pick up all the coins in said water fountain; and (3) eat junk food all the time. I believe I have the kids sold on running away, but they cannot decide if they would rather live in the California Museum of Science or the Bay Area Discovery Museum. Personal anecdotes aside, this book stands the test of time. Eternal themes of curiosity, loyalty, and good judgement reverberate through the pages of this well written, well paced story. This is an absolute must read for everyone, especially anyone over 50 who grew up in New York City!!

Jacob -I would give this 5 stars. MY favorite part is when they solve the mystery. My least favorite part is when they ran out of money. My favorite quote was "She looked at Jamie, and her eyes widened, M for Michelangelo."

Maddy - I think I would give this book 4.5 stars. it makes sense and it takes my interest because its first sentence is good. I couldn't take my eyes off this book. My favorite part is when she first saw the angel because she was so happy. My least favorite part is when she runs away because you can't see your parents any more and her parents miss their kids.

Tyler - This is one of the best books i have ever read. I would give it 5 stars. If i could give the book over 5 stars, i would.

Alexis - I would recommend this book to a friend. It is so funny and teaches you about a statue called angel and the statue is cool.

Delightful -- and not only for kids

Billed as a kid's book but I know grownups who secretly read it and liked it a lot. About two clever and extremely resourceful kids, a girl and her younger brother, who get fed up with family life (especially the girl, and who can blame her with four spoiled brothers at home to deal with) and run away to Manhattan, where they manage to successfully hide out for a week in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. They also solve a real and interestingly-handled mystery. Parts of the story are told from the point of view of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, a nice touch. If you have smart, curious kids, they'll like this book.

Portable Calvin

John Calvin at his normal excellence in interpreting scripture. He did this nearly 500 years ago and it is still full of insights today. It is on my Kindle so I can carry his commentary around in the palm of my hand. What's not to like?
