Good, but not her best character

First off, let me state that I adored Phaedre's trilogy and have read and re-read them. Imriel's trilogy was engaging, not as great as its predecessor, but still full of Jacqueline Carey's trademark broad scope, wonderful voices, and rich characterization. When an author is so initially successful there is always the chance that they will mine success until they are an imitation of themselves, and that's what seems to be happening here.
Moirin's story has a similar formula to her predecessors, beginning as a young girl, coming of age in Terre D'Ange and then her broader journey as a young adult. She goes farther geographically than before, but this actually struck me as a device. There is so much more in her current world to be mined, but instead we need more exotic locations to drive the story. This is one of my issues - Moirin is less engaging than previous protagonists and the new territory is poor compensation. While you can attribute her chronic bad choices to youth or love, after a while she just gets frustrating as a main character. I was particularly disappointed by the ending, which turns out to be anticlimactic, a destiny that is both artificial and demonstrates basic misunderstandings of the technology in question and how technology shifts occur. (further explanation would require too much spoiling, so I'll leave it at that.)
She still gets 3 stars - maybe 3 1/2, even - because not enough authors write broad epic novels well, and this still is an interesting read. But Jacqueline Carey is an author from whom I've come to expect genius, and so this new trilogy's beginning is a disappointment.

Good, even very good, but not great (at least not yet)...

I'm a big fan of Carey's Kushiel series, which I do consider to be great. I recently re-read the two trilogies for maybe the fourth or fifth time. They stand up very well to re-reading, which is one of my tests for great stories. The Kushiel stories are up there with Tolkien and Mary Renault's Alexander trilogy, to give you an idea of my standards.
I liked Naamah's Kiss but found it less compelling than the earlier books. I've liked Carey's stories for six main strengths: an engaging first-person voice; fabulous world-building; making the fictive characters' sexual desires a significant part of their own character development; high adventure; believably conflicted characters; and intricately plotted intrigue. Naamah's Kiss has the first four but not so much the last two.
Overall, it felt to me like a YA (young adult) novel in that it has the form of a journey of self-discovery, from childhood into the teens. That's not necessarily a bad thing; I still like good YA stories even now, starting my sixth decade. But the form self-discovery takes in Naamah's Kiss feels simpler than, say, Phedre's transformation from a willful child who relishes the thrill of terror to a young woman driven -- and conflicted -- by love and grief at the end of Kushiel's Dart.
That said, it was still a pleasure to visit the world Carey creates, and the end of the story introduces new complications that are promising for the direction of the next book. Without giving anything in the plot away, it did seem to me that the story finally got seriously complex at the end. I'll be interested to see where Carey takes it.

A likable character and an enjoyable read

First, although the story of this book stands on its own, it is not the one to start your journey in the world of Terre D'Ange. This is simply because Kushiel's Dart is the best first book of any fantasy world I have ever read. If you did not read it yet, then go to Kushiel's Dart and read the reviews to find out whether this fantasy series is for you.
Second, if you did not like the previous books in the Kushiel's Legacy series or feel that without Phèdre, Terre D'Ange is like Nightwish without Tarja Turunen, you won't like this book either. So don't bother.
Now we are amongst friends. I can speak frankly. Naamah's Kiss is a good read, but it is perhaps the weakest book in the series.
The heroine, Moirin mac Fainche, is a likable character with an interesting background. She has been brought up by her mother amongst the Maghuin Dhonn, the ancient elusive folk of Alba (see Kushiel's Justice). Moirin inherited some magic of the Maghuin Dhonn and her D'Angeline father links her to Naamah and Anael, two of the companions of blessed Elua. But, lacking the depth of character of Phèdre or even Imriel, she is moved on her path by a sort of geas, placed upon her by the great bear herself.
The plot is rather simple and quite similar to that of Kushiel's Scion. Moirin grows up, loves for the first time, leaves her home and gathers some experience in the world, finally completes a quest in which she has the chance to flex her magical muscles. Just as at the end of Kushiel's Scion, a great love affair is left hanging in the air and a possible dark enemy still looms somewhere beyond the horizon. Somewhat annoyingly, for the first time in the series, Ms. Carey resorts to plot vehicles most readers dislike in fantasy books. During the first part of the story, Moirin receives certain abilities without any good reason. These then turn out to be essential to solve the final quest. Later in the book, she even gets reminders that she will need these abilities, but no clear guidance. She is a clever person. She could have at least been allowed to find out fully on her own.
The world is still spectacular, one of the best that has ever been imagined. But there is nothing truly new in it. Although more than a century passed since Kushiel's Mercy, almost nothing of note has happened. Some may think that this is fine, since we all liked Terre D'Ange just as it was. But the lack of progress reduces the feeling of independent existence, which is so important for a great fantasy world. More importantly, the only new country we get acquainted with has no distinctive feel to it. It is just a typical feudalistic nation. In the previous novels, each country had its own history, unique culture, society, and customs. I sorely missed this feature. There may be some hope for the sequels. An Aragonian explorer recently discovered Terra Nova (America). I keep my fingers crossed that it will turn out to be a fascinating place.
So, why did I give Naamah's Kiss five stars? I have two reasons. Firstly, although this may not be amongst the real good books set in the world of Terre D'Ange, compared to many books (from different authors) which received three of four stars, it was simply more enjoyable. Secondly, we have seen that Ms. Carey can follow up a less than great start with a phenomenal sequel. I wrote before that for me, Kushiel's Dart was the best first book of a series, ever. I can add that I found Kushiel's Justice the best second novel of any trilogy. Its dark tone, the profound emotional revelations, ... If, like me you feel that "The Empire Strikes Back" is the best of the Star Wars movies, then you know what I mean. But you need to read Naamah's Kiss to get the chance. So, do it!
