A Seminal and Enduring History of an American Town

Author Caulkins seems surprised that her book turned out as long as it did. She began it as a labor of love, confessing to a "fondness for lingering in the avenues of the past." She is proud that the years of work she committed to unexplored areas of research yielded such a substantial book.
And, being a gracious and pious 19th century American, she credits "Taste, leisure, opportunity, and above all the kind permission of a benignant providence... [as having] concurred in allowing this design to be accomplished."
This is a civic history of New London and environs of extraordinary scope and depth. Her prose is clear and remarkably unadorned. She is interested in grand occurrences and little details.
Obviously, this is a crucial work for anyone interested in genealogical information about this part of America. (There is an index of family names and a short index of Indian names.)
However, like all great histories, the many, many details accumulate to produce an enduring picture of a place from earliest settlement to 1860.
