This book was originally published as a limited edition of 1100 copies in 2004 to provide a fresh, updated history of Dartmouth College, including events since the last book on this history published in the early 1960ties. In addition, it includes a detailed comment on some 500 of Dartmouth's alumni who have been amongst the most active in supporting activities of this institution since it's founding in 1769. The book was introduced at a dinner in Hanover, NH celebrating the largest gathering ever of Dartmouth's living recipients of the Dartmouth Alumni Award (DAA), December 3, 2004.
The book was created to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the DAA and to highlight many alumni who have received the DAA from classes starting with 1894. This Award has been presented to poets, politicians, power-brokers, civic leaders and other successful individuals. Alumni recipients included Robert Frost (D-1896; one of the greatest US poets); Charles Proctor (D-1900; often called "The Father of American Skiing"), Basil O'Connor (D-1912; Founder of the March of Dimes); Nelson Rockefeller (D-1930; 4 time Governor of New York and US Vice President); Paul Paganucci (D-1953; founder of an investment bank and later Chief Financial Officer at Dartmouth), and hundreds more.
The book also includes details on Daniel Webster (D-1801; U.S. Senator, Secretary of State and perhaps the most distinguished politician not to be elected U.S. President); Salmon P. Chase (D-1826; the only person to serve as a State Governor, Senator, Cabinet Secretary and Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court); Edward Tuck (D-1862; financier, U.S. Consul in France, namesake of Dartmouth's leading school of business administration, and contributor of major gifts to France and the USA); and many more.
These alumni all share a common trait: a lifelong dedication to Dartmouth. They are the very embodiment of Daniel Webster's immortal words to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1818: "It is, Sir, as I have said a small college. And yet, there are those who love it." And Dartmouth alumni have much to be proud of in their college. At the 1953 Dartmouth Commencement, then U.S. President Eisenhower said "This is what a college should be like."
The book reflects on the words of the poet Robert Frost "......Two roads diverged in the wood, and I - I took the one less traveled by.... And that has made all the difference." Frost, a member of the Dartmouth Class of 1896, received the DAA in 1962. Many Dartmouth alumni take the road less traveled by and make the world a lot more interesting place for their efforts.
